Frequently asked questions.

What types of tutoring do you offer?

I have worked with students ages 4-75 on everything from test prep and college application essays to professional writing and homework across multiple subjects. Though I have worked mostly with high school and college students, I can help almost any student regardless of age and need.

What makes you stand out from other tutors?

There are a few reasons I think we would be a good fit. First, I offer 1:1 attention that is tailored to the student’s individualized needs, style, and availability. The second is that I bring a great deal of expertise and education to the table. With Master’s degrees in English, Education, and Gender Studies along with 10+ years of teaching and tutoring experience in high school and college classrooms, I am confident that your money will be well-spent. Lastly, $75 per hour is actually quite low compared to other skilled professional tutors, particularly in the areas of application essays and test preparation. I do this in order to make my services as accessible as possible.

Why do you do all of your tutoring virtually?

If COVID taught us anything, it was how to pivot and adapt quickly to ever-changing circumstances. After teaching virtually for over a year, I learned that while the virtual setting offers its own challenges, the benefits outweigh them and often go unnoticed. I love the focused 1:1 attention it allows and find it valuable to work with students using the technology with which they are most familiar. Second, it allows me to work with students across the country, especially with college students who keep late hours and need convenient scheduling. Lastly, because of the unpredictable nature of Portland traffic and commute times, it alleviates an incredible amount of stress for all of us. And tutoring from home makes my cats happy too!

Can you tutor across any subject?

For younger grades (pre-high school), yes, absolutely. As we get into high school, there are a few subjects that might not be the best fit for me: Chemistry, Physics, and Advanced Math. But other than that, we should be just fine. My specialities are English, essay writing and editing, test prep, and homework/organizational help.

Do I need to pay a tutor for SAT/ACT prep?

I would argue yes. Even extremely bright students often struggle with accountability and sustained practice. While there are plenty of free resources online, there is nothing quite like the personalized attention of a tutor who requires that you show up consistently and do the work. Rather than simply tell students what they’ve gotten wrong, I work with them to break down where they’re consistently struggling and create ways to master these types of questions based on that feedback.

What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?

As long as you cancel with 24-hour notice, you will not be charged. If you cancel after that, there is an automatic $50 non-refundable charge. This is, of course, to protect my time and to keep my schedule open for students who need the help.

How many times a week should we meet?

While there is no set rule for this question, I’ve found that two 60 to 90-minute sessions per week tends to be the sweet spot. This ensures momentum and forward progress without being too overwhelming for students. With that said, students may choose to meet more often for a shorter period of time, especially when they have an essay due or an upcoming test. It is entirely up to you!
